Dr. Mary MacKenty
Dr. Mary MacKenty (she / her) is a professor of intercultural and global competences who specializes in educating Study Abroad students. She grew up in Massachusetts and studied International Relations & Spanish Language at Syracuse University during which time she spent three semesters abroad in Spain, Ecuador and Chile. She received her Erasmus Mundus Masters of Arts in Euroculture from the Università di Udine and Universidad de Deusto and Master in International Education from the Instituto Franklin. In 2022, she graduated with a Ph.D in Education from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Her ethnographic dissertation centered on the experiences of U.S. study abroad students directly enrolled in classes at a local Spanish university.
Mary currently lives in Barcelona but has previously worked abroad in nine countries from Argentina to the Netherlands and is fluent in four languages. She has five years of experience working in higher education for both European and American programs as an administrator of exchange programs and professor. She leverages her international experiences and understanding of the Study Abroad experience to design experiential courses which encourage students to interact with the local people and culture.
